This is My Story

I was in Aba, a village in Central Nigeria in West Africa, to bury my father who passed away in October of 2008, and I took with me a photographer who covered the burial for my family with camcorder video. As we went to drop him off to his own village I noticed next to his village a lot of people who gathered in and outside a hut. I asked him why all these people are gathered like that, for I thought there was a dispute around the area. He then told me no, this is a place where people kill dogs and eat them. I was shocked and I said to him lets go see if it’s true, and we began to shoot the video, a part of which you can see on this website.

As we went to the place I tried to talk them out of killing the innocent dogs. All my efforts to stop them were in vain, and I found myself a witness to this cruelty. A beautiful dog was in a cage and the dog was dragged out of the cage on a rope screaming for help, and all the dogs around the neighborhood started barking very extensively because one of their own was dying. And this dog was slaughtered, cooked and eaten under my watch.

I became furious and shocked in what this innocent dog had to go through so I began to interview those that were involved as to why they do this. The villagers told me that they eat the dogs for health reasons such as to cure diseases like malaria, diabetes, gonorrhea, and even hepatitis. This is a popular belief that dog meat cooked in a form of pepper soup will cure all these diseases. I see this as a superstitious idea so I told them things about dogs, teaching and enlightening them about the usefulness of dogs, and also about true medicine and treatment. I was surprised that the village men said they too love the dogs, but they felt they must eat them to stay alive.

I further asked the people what can I do for them to stop killing dogs and eating them for food or medicinal, and we came to an agreement. They promised to stop killing dogs for medicinal if I keep my promise to raise up money to build a clinic where they can be treated for the above mentioned diseases and that they will start working with me. I know this clinic will educate these villagers about true medicine. This was my creation of Animal Cruelty Prevention for Africa.

I made a vow to myself that I will do everything humanly possible not to allow another dog to be tortured and killed like the one I witnessed. And because of my experience in Africa I am still under shock and that’s why I am asking every person to Join Animal Cruelty Prevention for Africa.
